Mycosporine-like Amino Acids (MAAs): nature’s sunscreen from the ocean

Algae invented sun protection long before humans did!

MAAs are small nitrogen-rich molecules produced by marine algae and cyanobacteria in response to strong UV radiation. They act as intracellular sunscreens, absorbing harmful wavelengths without generating reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Because of this exceptional photostability, MAAs are now explored as:

  • Natural UV filters;
  • Anti-aging ingredients;
  • Dermatological actives;
  • Pharmaceutical protectants.

Market:

MAAs are still in the pre-industrial/early commercialization stage, therefore the MAA market is very niche, its growth being very strong for a few years. However, they target the rapidly growing global sun care sector worth more than USD 17 billion annually.
