Fucoxanthin: converting sunlight into high-added value molecules!

Algae are converting sunlight into molecules with high added value!

What makes brown algae brown... Is also one of the most valuable carotenoid!

Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid pigment synthesized by brown seaweed and microalgae (mainly diatoms and haptophytes). Its role is to optimize photosynthesis by capturing blue-green light, allowing algae to thrive in deeper waters.

Beyond its importance for algae, fucoxanthin has a very peculiar chemical structure and has attracted attention for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties and many studies now demonstrate its anti-cancerous effects. It is increasingly used in dietary supplements, cosmetics and functional foods, and remains an active field of biomedical research.

Market:

Brown microalgae are the best fucoxanthin producers. However so far, the most commercialized fucoxanthin comes from seaweed because:

  1. Brown algae species are already cultivated on a large scale,
  2. Production costs are currently lower than for some microalgae of interest
  3. Extraction processes, regulatory approvals, and industrial supply chains have therefore developed around algae
  4. More seaweed species are now authorized for human consumption.

Although these numbers can vary from one source to another, according to Maximize Market Research, the global fucoxanthin market was valued at USD 230.9 million in 2025 and is expected to reach nearly USD 325 million by 2032, with a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 5%.

Overall, despite discrepancies between estimates, all studies point toward sustained growth driven by the nutraceutical and functional-food sectors.
