Astaxanthin: the red gold of algae!

Tiny organism, industrial-scale molecule!

Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid naturally produced by the green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis, mainly under stress conditions such as high light, nutrient limitation or salinity, which make this peculiar species become... red! The alga accumulates astaxanthin as a protective molecule against oxidative stress.

This pigment is one of the most powerful natural antioxidants known, widely used in aquaculture (salmon, shrimp), nutraceuticals, cosmetics and human health. It shows strong anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and photoprotective properties.

Tiny organism, industrial-scale molecule!

Market:

  1. The global astaxanthin market was valued at approximately USD 1.9 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 4.3 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 9.5%.
  2. Natural astaxanthin accounted for 58.4% of the global market in 2025, reflecting the growing consumer preference for naturally sourced ingredients over synthetic alternatives.
  3. Aquaculture and animal feed represented the largest application segment, accounting for 45.7% of the global market in 2025, driven by its use for pigmentation and fish health.
  4. The nutraceutical segment alone generated USD 495.9 million in 2025 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.4% through 2033, supported by increasing demand for natural antioxidants and healthy aging products.
