Two Key Publications Mark a Milestone for the European Algae Sector

The EU4Algae initiative has just announced the release of two significant outcomes that promise to support the safe and sustainable growth of the algae sector across Europe. The first publication, titled “Overview of European Initiatives for a Safe and Sustainable Algae Industry”, is authored by Vitor Verdelho, Arianna Rizzo, Silvio Mangini, Carlos Unamunzaga, and Jean-Paul Cadoret.

Released under Task 1.7 of the EU4Algae project, the report consolidates essential information for stakeholders aiming to understand and enhance the algae industry’s sustainability framework within Europe. While still an emerging sector, the European algae industry shows strong potential for growth—provided that robust policies and strategic actions are put into place.

Key insights from the report include:

  • The sector requires new policies and regulations to close existing gaps and increase competitiveness against non-EU imports.
  • Key initiatives and supporting organisations such as EU4Algae, the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA), and Seaweed for Europe play a vital role in driving cooperation, research consolidation, and evidence-based policymaking.
  • The publication provides a comprehensive overview of resources, platforms, and initiatives that are enabling safe and sustainable algae production across the continent.
  • It also outlines the frameworks and policy environments necessary for the environmentally responsible development of the industry.

Referred to as Outcome O1.24, the report is expected to serve as a foundational resource for decision-makers, industry leaders, researchers, and investors interested in advancing a safe and competitive algae industry within the EU.
This is the first of two new outcomes released by EU4Algae—stay tuned for the second one!
