EABA Highlights Algae’s Role in Sustainable Ocean Economy at UNOC3

The European Algae Biomass Association (EABA) brought marine biotechnology into focus at UNOC3 in Nice, hosting a roundtable on how algae can power a more sustainable ocean economy.

During the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA) organised a high-level side event titled “Blue Biotech for a Sustainable Ocean: Unlocking the Potential of Marine Biological Resources.” The event explored the growing role of algae in the blue economy, with support from Métropole Nice Côte d'Azur.

EABA’s General Manager, Vitor Verdelho, opened the session with a keynote speech, “Algae and Europe Today and Tomorrow,” highlighting the expanding use of algae in food, feed, biomaterials, and climate resilience. He called for stronger European strategies and increased investment in algae innovation.

The roundtable gathered representatives from Olmix, Inalve, INNOV&SEA, and students from MSc MARRES - Université Côte d'Azur, offering a multi-perspective dialogue on marine biotech’s future. The discussion was moderated by Juliette Armeni-Ripari, EABA’s Special Project Manager, and stressed the importance of youth involvement and cross-sector collaboration.

By promoting innovation and awareness, EABA continues to advocate for algae’s recognition as a key player in ocean-based sustainability solutions.
