Algae Picture Contest Closes with Overwhelming Global Participation

The first edition of the Algae Picture Contest has officially concluded, and the results are truly inspiring. Organised to celebrate the beauty and diversity of algae, the contest drew remarkable interest from around the globe, highlighting the growing enthusiasm for both microalgae and macroalgae photography.

🌍 Global Reach and Enthusiastic Participation

In total, 126 photos were submitted across the contest’s three categories:
Microalgae: 69 entries
Macroalgae: 49 entries
Consumers: 8 entries

The submissions came from 21 countries, showcasing algae through a wide variety of lenses and perspectives:
10 European countries: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland
11 Non-European countries: Australia, Brazil, Chile (Chilean Patagonia), India, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, Tunisia, and Turkey

🌱 A Contest to Remember

The contest not only succeeded in uniting algae enthusiasts worldwide but also raised awareness of the visual richness and scientific importance of algae in ecosystems, industry, and daily life.

Organisers expressed their joy:

Participants and followers won’t have to wait long. The top entries in each category will be:

Exhibited at AlgaEurope 2025: The top 10 photos per category will be featured during the event.

Awarded: One winner per category will receive a free ticket to attend AlgaEurope 2025, where the official award ceremony will take place.
