📢 BREAKING NEWS: news algaespecies entries in the Novel Food status Catalogue 🌱

➡️ What is the Novel Food status Catalogue?

It is a tool to check if a product can be put on the EU market as food or food supplement 🥗, or it has to be authorized by the EU because it is «novel» and as such has to pass a safety assessment: Novel Food status Catalogue (New)

➡️ What about algae products?

Algae products in the Catalog include more than 60 entries covering several species of microalgae and seaweed whole biomass and products derived thereof (extracts, oils).

➡️ Some definitions:

«Not novel in food / in food supplements» = was present in EU people diet before 1997 (creation of the NF Catalogue) and is recognized as safe. It is a “normal” food (does not contain food additives) or food supplement, and its access to the market is not subject to the pre-market authorization. Example: Spirulina biomass / Haematococcus biomass.

⚠️ Any other food uses of a food supplement product might be considered to be novel and consequently might need to be authorized pursuant to the requirements of the Novel Food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 &.
